Film as a process of discovery.

WORKING WITH ACTORS / PRODUCTION

My work combines narrative filmmaking, improvisation and ethnographic observation. I begin with structure, but not certainty.

The screenplay establishes a trajectory and a set of questions. Rehearsal, production and editing remain open to what actors, locations and lived experience reveal. I am interested in behavioural truth, duration and the tension between a preconceived story and the world that actually appears in front of the camera.

Place is not a backdrop, but a generative force in the work.

Recent projects have deepened this method through teaching and research-creation. The Ibsen Project emerged within a post-secondary environment. Remedial Ed extends that inquiry into Central Alberta through workshops, improvisation and observation.

Editing is not simply assembly. It is the stage where discovered material finds form through rhythm, juxtaposition, omission and performance.

Carl Bessai

CARL BESSAI · FILMMAKER

Carl Bessai is a filmmaker based in Red Deer, Alberta. Over more than twenty-five years he has made over 25 films, documentaries and television projects.

His films have screened internationally at Sundance, Toronto, Berlin, Busan, Moscow, Vancouver and other festivals and retrospectives, including the Canadian Film Institute and the Museum of Modern Art. His work ranges across drama, comedy, thriller, documentary and experimental forms, while returning consistently to questions of family, identity, place and belonging.

After a practice shaped by work in Vancouver, Los Angeles and Berlin, Bessai relocated to Central Alberta in 2025 to teach Film Production at Red Deer Polytechnic. The move continues an exploratory practice attentive to regional environments, collaborators and the ways everyday places shape narrative.

Alongside filmmaking, he has worked extensively as a mentor and educator through the Directors Guild of Canada, Capilano University, Vancouver Film School, the Whistler Film Festival and professional training initiatives across Canada.
